Fun Facts about Salt Lake City Weekly: History and Current Features
Salt Lake City is an interesting place to live in. It is situated in a mountain valley and is elevated a little over 1300 meters. When it comes to newspapers, Salt Lake City weekly is among the most popular. This is a free tabloid paged newspaper that is published every week for the readers.
Salt Lake City is often called City Weekly by the locals. The newspaper was born with the initial name of Private Eye City Weekly. Back then, it was published every Thursday. John Saltas was the owner and the president of the Copperfield Publishing Inc, which was responsible for the distribution of the said weekly newspaper.
The reason behind its primary name was because it contained promotions and news regarding dance clubs and bars, which were private because of the Utah State liquor laws. Originally, this was a newsletter which Saltas mailed to the private club goers.
In the year 1992, it became a weekly tabloid style paper and interested readers can grab copies in Salt Lake City, Park City, Utah County and Ogden outlets. Later on, the paper began giving out awards and recognitions particularly to local music. It was known as the Salt Lake Area Music and More or SLAMMY awards.
In 1997, it was now called Salt Lake City Weekly since many people mistook the Private Eye as a detective agency. City Weekly tried yet failed to lift Utah's restrictions on advertising about liquors during the late 90s. Today, it is younger and is geared towards liberal readers. The paper features art film reviews as well as reviews about restaurants, local music bands, events and many more.
